Sky-high with Aether Legends

Daydreaming is one of my favorite hobbies - but it has its pitfalls. Like falling asleep on a bus and waking up at a faraway depot. Or drifting off during a job interview (tragically, I did not become a barista). Or even just zoning out waiting for my coffee to cool... only to discover it has gone cold. (Maybe losing out on that job was for the best, after all...) 

But, finally, us daydreamers have some vindication. For Aether Legends is here, along with its fantastical, dreamlike dimension set among the clouds. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Aether Legends reimagines the beloved Aether Java mod, which first introduced players to the Aether dimension. Now, Spark Universe and the Aether Team are bringing the Aether to Bedrock - for the first time. What a delight! 

On cloud nine 

Giant aerwhales that majestically drift by, carried by strange currents. Fluffy pastel clouds to walk on, sink into, or bounce from. Vast networks of floating islands with biomes mysterious, beautiful, and mysteriously beautiful.  

It’s a whole new wonderous world of unique resources and adventure. Mine unique ores like Ambrosium, Zanite and Gravitite, forge powerful armor, uncover epic loot, and explore intriguing structures. Are subterranean mazes generally considered non-hostile territory?  

And the local fauna isn’t limited to just flying whales: there’s also the flying pigs (phygs!), flying cows, the moa (which, unlike its real-world counterpart, is definitely not flightless), and aerbunnies.

Try wearing an aerbunny as a hat and see what happens. No, I’m not joking. If you know, you know! 

But alas, at the risk of sounding like my well-meaning relatives: before you take to the sky, you must take care of some practical matters.  

So how does it work?  

In practice, you use the Aether Legends DLC to create a new Minecraft world which contains the Aether dimension. Note: You can’t add the Aether dimension to existing worlds. This is because Aether dimension, unlike the dynamic base dimensions (Overworld, Nether, and End), is not procedurally generated – but a massive, 5,000 x 5,000, lovingly pre-built world. 

To get to the Aether dimension in-game, you must build the Aether portal. This requires some glowstone, which is most commonly found in the Nether. Journeying through a grim place like the Nether to ascend to a wonderland like the Aether – talk about the hero’s journey! 

Not all sunshine and rainbows 

The Aether might feel positively dreamlike compared to the Nether, but it is not without its dangers. The dimension is teeming with threats, both small and legendary. Will you be able to prevail and defeat all three of its epic bosses — the Slider, the Valkyrie Queen, and the final foe, Karthul? 

Ok, so perhaps we’ve established that for all its whimsical wonder, the Aether is not exactly a spot for idle rest and relaxation. But with a place as dreamy as this, who needs to drift off?  

My coffee may be destined to go cold, but this time it will be because I’m trying my best to dodge the Slider, steal a moa egg, or bounce around clouds. And I’m okay with that.
