The Ice Caves

Joining the four other cave biomes currently in the game, the Ice Caves generate exclusively below cold biomes.

They are primarily made up of packed ice and calcite, but they also feature a new mob and some new blocks that bring the caves to life:

Ice Crystal Image

Ice Crystals

Only found in the Ice Caves, ice crystals generate exclusively on top of packed ice and emit a light level of 4, providing light to the Ice Caves instead of glow lichen, which do not generate in the biome.

While the block can only generate on the floor, it can be placed at any orientation.

Note: Mojang has stated that they intend to increase the size of the ice crystal.

Icicles

Also found only in the Ice Caves, icicles only grow in low-light areas from the bottom of packed ice and grow up to five blocks long.

If a light source is too close to the icicle, it will break and fall, dealing damage to any entities in its path and leaving behind the base of the icicle.

Note: Icicles can be found growing from the bottoms of other blocks, it is unknown whether this is intentional or not, as patch notes state they only grow from packed ice.

Frostbite Zombie Image

The Frostbite

The Frostbite is a frozen variant of the Zombie that only spawns in cold biomes, including the Ice Caves. The Frostbite can also spawn when a Zombie is under powdered snow for 30 seconds, but can be turned back into a Zombie when underwater for 30 seconds.

It has a chance to spawn with an Ice Ball, a projectile that does 4 damage (scales with velocity), but prefers to use its melee attack if within range, which applies the Freezing effect for 3 seconds.

The Freezing effect causes any affected entity to shake, slow down, have reduced jump height, and take damage (about 2 damage per damage tick). The effect can be negated by wearing any piece of leather armor.
