Minecraft Live is coming up, the yearly event where the developers give players updates about the game! It will take place on October 15, and voting opens on October 13. All three mobs for the famous Minecraft Live mob vote were announced a few days ago on Minecraft's official YouTube channel, in this order:
- Crab: lives in mangrove swamps, and its claw helps players place blocks farther away than the current limit.
- Armadillo: spawns in savannah biomes and other "warm places," and its scute "can be used to craft armor for your wolf."
- Penguin: spawns in stony shores. It's like dolphins (which make things move faster in water), but for boats instead of swimming players.
This mob vote has been facing a lot of toxicity and scrutiny from the playerbase. Advocates for each mob have constantly been hostile toward other mobs' supporters, and people have also been hunting for "fine print" in the mob details:
- Will crab claws only help place blocks farther away, or also break them?
- Do we really need penguins if people just use elytras and the Nether anyway?
- Wolves usually just sit at people's bases, so what purpose does wolf armor serve?
There has also been a push to eliminate the mob vote entirely and add three mobs each update. A recent petition on change.org with over 300,000 signers cited mod-makers' ability to add mobs much faster than Mojang, and "content creators mobilizing their fanbases" to vote for whichever mob the creator prefers. The community is now full of anti-mob-vote memes linked to petitions, claiming that Mojang is some evil capitalist oppressor.
However, Mojang didn't back down from Java chat reporting or cancelling fireflies, so they probably won't back down this time. That remains to be seen. Stay tuned!
