Mojang has removed the server-admin scripting module from Realms, saying it was being used in large-scale, incompatible ways that violated platform rules and contributed to instability. Most players won’t be affected, but some Realms relying on it may lose functionality. Mojang says the change improves performance and reliability, though some developers argue other infrastructure issues may also be involved.
Mojang has published an update stating that Minecraft Realms will no longer support the server-admin scripting module, describing the change as a stability improvement for the wider Realms service.
- Realms will no longer support the server-admin scripting module.
- Joining and playing on Realms will continue to work normally.
- However, experiences that relied on the module may no longer function in the same way.
Mojang states that a small number of Realms used the server-admin scripting module "in creative ways" and at a commercial scale, which they describe as:
- Incompatible with Realms' technical architecture
- In conflict with the Microsoft Services Agreement
Mojang further claims that as this usage grew, it placed sustained load on Realms and contributed to recent instability and outages players experienced.
- Mojang states most players won't notice any change.
- A very small subset of Realms that depended on the server-admin scripting module may be affected.
Mojang's stated rationale is that removing the module will:
- Improve scale management and performance
- Make Realms more stable and reliable for everyone, especially during high traffic periods
Realm Hub also asked several developers in the community for their thoughts on this change. While there is agreement that service stability matters, many developers questioned the timing and framing of Mojang's statement.
In particular, some developers pointed out that the announcement arrives alongside broader Realms infrastructure changes currently being discussed in the community (including NetherNet-related coordination/protocol changes). They argue that recent Realms instability has also been heavily associated with connection reliability and support tooling, including Realm management services and bots (e.g., Realm Bot, UniqueShield, and similar services), and that these issues may not be fully explained by the server-admin scripting module alone.
A minority view raised by some developers is that the server-admin module removal may be used as a convenient explanation for wider connectivity problems, including concerns about realm-connect style link flows and Realms access patterns. To be clear: this is speculation, not a confirmed claim, and Mojang's statement does not mention these theories directly.
Realm Hub will continue to monitor the impact of this change, and will share updates as confirmed technical details become available.
