Frostburn Update

Frostburn Update brought new creatures to hot and cold biomes alongside new blocks. It released for Java Edition 1.10 on June 8, 2016.

Mobs

Polar Bears

Polar Bear Polar Bear

Polar Bears introduced a large animal to icy landscapes, including adults and cubs. Their defensive behavior around cubs made approaching a family different from meeting a lone animal.

Strays and Husks

  • Stray Strays are snowy Skeleton variants whose arrows apply Slowness.
  • Husk Husks are desert Zombie variants that can inflict Hunger and remain active in sunlight.

These regional enemies made hot and cold environments more distinct while retaining familiar Skeleton and Zombie behavior.

World Generation

Fossils

Underground Fossils introduced buried skeletal formations made from Bone Blocks. They provided an unusual discovery during mining and a source of a new pale building material.

Blocks and Building

  • Magma Block Magma Blocks introduced a damaging Nether block.
  • Nether Wart Blocks gave Nether Wart a decorative storage form.
  • Red Nether Bricks expanded the Nether construction palette.
  • Bone Blocks could be used for building or converted into Bone Meal.

Creator Tools

Structure Blocks became usable tools for saving and placing structures. They supported repeating buildings and custom-map development without reconstructing every block by hand.

Other Highlights

Auto-jump arrived as an optional movement setting. The release paired a focused Survival expansion with building blocks and creator tools, balancing its hot-and-cold theme across several systems.
