Better Together Update

Better Together Update unified compatible Minecraft platforms around the Bedrock Edition experience. It arrived as Bedrock Edition 1.2.0, on September 20, 2017.

Multiplayer and Platforms

A Shared Bedrock Edition

The Better Together Update connected supported mobile, Windows 10, and Xbox One players through a common release line. The shared game was named Minecraft, while the original PC game was distinguished as Java Edition.

Cross-platform worlds, Realms, built-in server access, and Marketplace content formed a larger connected ecosystem. Java Edition remained a separate edition and was not included in Bedrock cross-play.

Later Console Releases

Nintendo Switch joined Bedrock with 1.4.1 on June 21, 2018. PlayStation 4 followed with 1.14.0 on December 10, 2019. Neither console was part of the September 2017 launch.

Blocks and Building

Alongside the platform changes, the update added or expanded features such as Stained Glass, Banners, Armor Stands, and Jukeboxes. These gave builders more decorative choices and brought additional features from other editions into the shared game.

Interface and World Tools

Updated menus and world settings supported the new multiplayer model. Book and Quill and related additions made written information useful inside worlds, while expanded controls helped players manage shared experiences.

Release History

The initial unified release was Bedrock Edition 1.2.0 on September 20, 2017. Better Together describes a platform and multiplayer transition as well as a feature update, so its later console arrivals belong in the timeline without being treated as simultaneous launches.
