Bountiful Update

Bountiful Update added underwater monuments, new mobs, and a broad set of building and mapmaking tools. It released for Java Edition 1.8 on September 2, 2014.

World Generation

Ocean Monuments

Ocean Monuments gave deep-ocean exploration a destination. Their rooms contain Prismarine, Prismarine Bricks, Dark Prismarine, and Sea Lanterns, with Guardians protecting the structure and Elder Guardians making excavation more difficult.

Mobs

Guardian Guardian

  • Guardians and Elder Guardians introduced underwater attacks and new monument loot.
  • Rabbits added a small passive animal with several appearances and associated drops.
  • Endermites added a tiny hostile mob connected with Ender Pearl use.

Blocks and Building

Stone and Wood

Granite, Diorite, and Andesite diversified underground stone and could be polished for construction. Red Sandstone added a companion material for Red Sand environments. More wood-specific Doors, Fences, and Fence Gates helped builds keep a consistent material theme.

Banners and Armor Stands

Armor Stand Armor Stand

Banners combined colors and patterns into customizable decorations. Armor Stands displayed equipment, giving storage rooms, shops, and decorative scenes a new focal point.

Slime Blocks

Slime Blocks made moving contraptions more flexible by letting Pistons move connected blocks. Their bouncy surface also introduced a distinctive interaction for falls and movement.

Creator Tools

Spectator mode allowed players to observe a world without normal physical interaction. Expanded commands and mapmaking functionality gave creators more control over world behavior and customized experiences.

Other Highlights

The Bountiful Update combined a new underwater challenge with a large building palette. Its additions affected ordinary Survival, decorative construction, and custom maps rather than focusing on a single system.
