The Update that Changed the World
The Update that Changed the World made the Overworld more varied through new biomes, terrain, and building materials. It released for Java Edition 1.7.2 on October 25, 2013.
World Generation
A More Varied Overworld
The terrain overhaul added and reworked biomes, changing where players find trees, flowers, snow, and unusual landforms. Savannas, Mesas, Roofed Forests, Ice Spikes, and other new environments made exploration more varied.
Biome transitions and terrain generation were also revised. The largest differences appear in newly generated chunks; existing builds remain in their original terrain.
Blocks and Building
Acacia and Dark Oak
Acacia Log
Acacia and Dark Oak introduced new trees and wood colors. Their Logs, Planks, and related building blocks gave regional landscapes a matching construction palette.
Flowers, Glass, and Sand
- A wider range of Flowers, including tall plants, expanded gardens and Dye sources.
- Stained Glass and Stained Glass Panes added transparent blocks in all 16 colors.
- Red Sand complemented the new Mesa landscape.
- Nether Portals could be built in larger sizes, allowing more varied entrances and architectural designs.
Items and Fishing
Fishing expanded beyond the original fish item. Salmon, Clownfish, and Pufferfish joined the available catches, while the loot system added treasure and junk. The change turned a Fishing Rod into a route to useful finds as well as food.
Other Highlights
The update’s name reflects its focus on the shape and identity of the world. It introduced the biome variety that later releases continued to build on, while the new wood, plants, and colored glass gave builders ways to bring those environments into their own creations.
