Pretty Scary Update

Pretty Scary Update added a new boss, new enemies, and more ways to build and customize worlds. It released for Java Edition 1.4.2 on October 25, 2012.

Mobs and Bosses

Wither

Wither Wither

The Wither introduced a boss players summon themselves. Wither Skeletons and their Skulls provided the ingredients for creating it, while the Nether Star rewarded victory with a new route to powerful base upgrades.

New Encounters

  • Witch Witches used Potions to attack and protect themselves.
  • Bat Bats added ambient life to dark spaces.
  • Zombie Villagers connected undead encounters with the possibility of curing a Villager.
  • Wither Skeletons made Nether Fortresses more dangerous and supplied their rare Skulls.

Blocks and Building

Beacons and Anvils

Beacon Beacon

Build a mineral-block pyramid beneath a Beacon to choose beneficial effects for its surrounding area. The block turns the Wither’s reward into a permanent base feature.

Anvil Anvils provided equipment repair, enchantment combination, and renaming, using experience alongside the relevant items. They also introduced a heavy block that can fall and cause damage.

Decoration

Item Frames display possessions on walls, Flower Pots hold small plants, and Mob Heads add collectible decorations. Cobblestone Walls broadened the options for boundaries and paths.

Items and Survival

Carrots, Potatoes, and Pumpkin Pie expanded food choices and farming. The update also changed equipment interactions and Villager-related gameplay alongside its headline mobs.

Creator Tools

Command Blocks gave mapmakers a reusable way to run commands from a world. Together with the update’s expanded command functionality, they supported adventure maps and automated events without a player entering every command manually.
