The Wild Update
The Wild Update added new places to explore above ground and deep below it. It arrived as Java Edition 1.19 and Bedrock Edition 1.19.0, on June 7, 2022.
World Generation
Deep Dark and Ancient Cities
The Deep Dark introduced Sculk-covered terrain beneath the Overworld. Ancient Cities added large underground structures with rare loot and a sound-sensitive warning system. Careful movement matters more than clearing every enemy from a room.
Mangrove Swamps
Mangrove Swamps supplied Mangrove Trees, tangled Roots, and Mud. Propagules grow into new trees, while the Mangrove wood set adds a red-toned building palette.
Mobs
Warden
Warden
The Warden responds to sound, movement, and nearby activity rather than ordinary vision. Repeated Sculk Shrieker warnings can make one emerge. Its strength and ranged attack make avoiding it the intended approach rather than treating it as a routine loot boss.
Frogs and Tadpoles
Frogs lay Frogspawn, which hatches into Tadpoles. The biome where a Tadpole grows determines its adult Frog variant. Frogs eat small Slimes and small Magma Cubes; the latter produce Froglights, with the color tied to the Frog variant.
Allay
Allays collect dropped items matching the item they have been given. Note Blocks help direct where they bring their finds, making the mob useful for collection systems and resource gathering.
Blocks and Building
The Sculk family includes Sculk, Sculk Veins, Sculk Catalysts, and Sculk Shriekers. Catalysts spread Sculk when nearby mobs die and provide another route to experience-related interactions.
Mud can be dried into Clay or combined with Wheat to create Packed Mud, leading to Mud Bricks and their building variants. Mangrove Roots and Muddy Mangrove Roots add more wetland textures.
Items and Exploration
- Chest Boats carry supplies during water travel.
Recovery Compasses point toward a player’s last death location.- Goat Horns provide collectible sounds.
- Nine Disc Fragments found in Ancient Cities craft Music Disc 5.
Edition History
Java and Bedrock launched on June 7, 2022. Minecraft Education received the features in 1.19.52 on April 12, 2023. Fireflies and the expanded Birch Forest concept shown during development were not included in the released Wild Update.
