Texture Update
Texture Update refreshed the look of familiar blocks and items. It arrived as Bedrock Edition 1.10.0 and Java Edition 1.14, with a rollout spanning March–April 2019.
Visual Changes
Familiar Blocks, New Textures
The Texture Update redrew a broad range of blocks and items under Jasper “JAPPA” Boerstra. The goal was a more consistent visual language while keeping recognizable materials and silhouettes.
Stone, ores, wood, plants, food, equipment, and many other textures changed. Existing builds automatically used the updated artwork without replacing their blocks or rebuilding the world.
Development Iterations
The redesign went through public test packs and revisions. Development screenshots show experiments as well as textures that reached release, so an early image should not be treated as an exact record of the final pack.
Resource Packs
Programmer Art
Java Edition included Programmer Art for players who preferred the earlier texture style. Resource Packs continued to offer additional customization beyond either built-in appearance.
Some iconic textures, including the Creeper, retained their established look. The project refreshed the game’s artwork rather than changing every asset indiscriminately.
