Back to School Update
Back to School Update combined new village features with tools for reading, writing, and managing lessons. This Minecraft Education update released as 1.12.0, with its rollout dated August 14, 2019.
Classroom Tools
Reading and Written Work
Book and Quill PDF export allowed students to take written work beyond the game. This made an in-world record useful for sharing or reviewing after a lesson.
Immersive Reader improved access to supported text, connecting reading assistance with classroom content rather than requiring a separate document workflow.
Lessons and Sign-In
Library links connected playable worlds with lesson resources. Supported Single Sign-On reduced repeated sign-in steps, making preparation and joining an activity easier.
Multiplayer
Join codes and permission controls helped educators organize classroom sessions. The controls supported inviting a group and setting how players could interact with a shared world.
Gameplay and Building
The update brought features from Bedrock 1.10 and 1.11, including the redesigned Villages and their broader set of utility blocks. These additions gave classroom worlds more building materials, trading interactions, and exploration possibilities.
Platform Releases
Windows, macOS, and iOS received 1.12.0 on August 14, 2019. iPadOS availability followed on September 24. The platform distinction belongs in the release history rather than an undifferentiated date range.
